3) Volunteers Needed: Linda Mabalot Memorial Tribute
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PAA isn’t sure how many of you knew Linda Mabalot, but she has impacted and inspired so many Pilipinos and Asian Americans through her work and gifts to our community as the Executive Director of Visual Communications.

PAA would like to extend a volunteer opportunity to you all for her Memorial Service this Sunday, June 22 at the JACCC
in Los Angeles. The memorial starts at 4pm and there will be a reception afterwards (~5:30pm). PAA is helping coordinate the event and one of our primary responsibilities is to obtain volunteers. Even if you are only able to help out for a couple of hours, it would be greatly appreciated. Please email PAA at alumni@uclapaa.net if you can give back to a leader who gave so much to us.
“For over twenty years, Linda has guided Visual Communications, the premier Asian-American film/media center in Southern California and the oldest in the Asian Pacific American community. VC itself began as a community program out of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. Linda was there throughout the growth of VC, and oversaw the Visual Communications Film Festival, which has presented many seminal Asian Pacific American films such as Flipside, The Debut, and Better Luck Tomorrow.
Linda received many accolades and awards for her work in both the media and community. The Pilipino Alumni Association of UCLA just recently recognized her as this year’s recipient of the Royal Morales Community Achievement Award, which seeks to honor those that have given of themselves and made extraordinary contributions to further the UCLA Pilipino Community and the Pilipino community as a whole in their work and activities.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From UCLA Student, Amalia Miller

“Hello PAA members!!

This is Amalia Miller (3rd year, Cognitive Science/Musicology majors) saying hello to all the members and alumni of the Pilipino community! I'm writing to ask for your help on my 500 mile journey to the AIDS Marathon Honolulu. I've started training for the 26.2 mile run that will take place in December and am really excited and looking forward to it! I've never done anything this big or challenging before in terms of helping for a cause but it is such an inspiring group to be working with. I'm asking for your support through donations- my goal is to raise $5,000 to help AIDS Project Los Angeles with all of the services they provide to people in need. I know that I may not have seen you in a while or even met you at all, but your donation would be enhancing the life of someone living with AIDS/HIV. It's very simple to donate if you just click the following link: http://www.aidsmarathon.com/participant.jsp?runner=LA-3162&year=2003
If you decide to donate, please email me back and let me know so I can thank you and add you to my scrolling list of donors on the website and keep you updated. Thanks so much!

Much Love,

Amalia Miller”

9) Asian American Film: Charlotte Sometimes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Los Angeles Friends and Indie Film Supporters,

CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES, our critically-acclaimed, double IFP Spirit Award nominee and multi-festival winner, opens in theaters in Los Angeles next weekend, June 20th.

Please pass this along to your friends and colleagues who enjoy high-quality, entertaining, non-formulaic films.

The reviews have been terrific and the word-of-mouth truly gratifying. But, we're opening against films like "The Hulk", and it takes a lot for a small, independent, Asian American film to compete with the commercial behemoths. We know there are a lot of demands on your free time, but PLEASE make plans with a couple of friends to go see CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES when it opens in L.A. next weekend.

Theaters and info numbers are listed below, or buy advance tickets online at Moviefone.com

It’s a sexy, provocative, poetic film...you’ll be glad you went.

Roger Ebert said
"Mysterious and erotic...Uncannily realistic, fascinating and illuminating...about secrets, power and buried issues between Asian American men and women...a relationship picture that plays like an emotional thriller!"

Peter Sobczynski of Liberty Suburban Newspapers raves
"Four Stars! A WONDERFUL MOVIE!! Stylish, self-assured, reminiscent of Robert Altman."

The San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival calls CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES
"the most sophisticated exploration of Asian American sexuality in recent memory."

Nathan Rabin of The Onion called it
"Ingeniously plotted and deceptively complex...Byler creates confident, sexually assertive, complicated Asian American female characters without being overly self-conscious about defying stereotypes."

Todd Inoye of the San Jose Metro declared
"CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES produces enough sexual tension to power a small island and fuel hours of cafe discussion. Byler surprises with subtle charms, conveying drama and intimacy with simple dialogue, improv and deafening silence."

Entertainment Insiders added,
"One of the Top Ten films of the year! The ‘sex, lies and videotape’ for a new generation."

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:

Pass this letter on to your friends who care about interesting films.

We don’t have a lot to work with in terms of advertising and marketing resources, so every email you send, every conversation you have about CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES means a great deal.

If you'd like to help us spread the word, contact us at charlotte_sometimes_la@hotmail.com and join us in the screenings, mixers, and Q/A with the cast and crew.

Thanks for your support,
