6. Sponsorship Request: UCLA Student AIDS Marathon Runner
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From UCLA Student, Crystal Carrillo
Dear PAA,
I know I know. I haven't even met most of you and you don't know me and all of a sudden here I am emailing you about me doing a MARATHON... However, I consider myself a member of the Pilipino community here at UCLA and thus, we are all family. It isn't any marathon - I will be participating in the Honolulu AIDS Marathon this December! Yup, 26.2 miles. It's going to be worth it however because while I go through 6 months of training and raise 3000 dollars I'll know that my efforts and the support from all of you will be contributing to those in our Los Angeles community living with AIDS and HIV. I expect to log nearly 500 miles - my Adidas' won't know what hit 'em and I'll no longer be able to feel the blisters on my feet. It's all part of the National AIDS Marathon Training Program, which raises money for AIDS Project Los Angeles, one of the leading providers of AIDS services in Los Angeles County.
The AIDS epidemic is far from over. More than one million Americans, and 40 million others around the world, are now living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. And Los Angeles has the second highest number of people living with AIDS in the nation.
This is why I am committed to raise at least $3000 before September 3th, although I would like to raise even more. Donations will allow AIDS Project Los Angeles to provide food, housing, transportation and other important AIDS services -- to help keep people alive until there's a cure. I know that we're all starving college students and broke post-grads but any donation you can make to help me meet my goal would be most appreciated! It's so easy to make a donation, just click on the link below. It only takes a few moments to make a contribution that could enhance the life of someone living with HIV/AIDS.
This is certainly the most challenging task I have ever attempted in my life, but I am confident that with your help I can make it to the finish line. Thank you for supporting me in this tremendous undertaking. When I hit the road this December to complete the Honolulu Marathon, I'll know that you helped me and many others along the way.
Thanks and Love,
Crystal Carrillo

10) Pagkamulat a Musical Awakening June 28, 2003
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Philippine music has connections with many different cultures across the globe: from the xylophone-like gamelan of Southeast Asia to the stringed mandolin of Europe, from the flat gongs of China, to the castanets of Spain. Over time, Filipinos modified these and other foreign musical instruments to better suit indigenous materials and preferences. Today, music of the Philippines is a true blending of Western and Eastern influences - a reflection of the Filipino's rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Featuring traditional and contemporary Philippine music by Rondalla Club of Los Angeles with dance accompaniment by Kayamanan Ng Lahi Philippine Folk Arts
Rondalla Club of Los Angeles (under the direction of Leonilo "Boy" Angos and Tagumpay De Leon) and Kayamanan Ng Lahi (under the direction of Joel Jacinto and Barbara Ele) combine their talents to resonate beautiful melodies and rhythms with vibrant steps and movements of the Filipinos in a concert entitled . . .
